Why is crousty chicken hot & spicy classified as ultra‑processed (NOVA 4) and what specific additives does it contain?

The product is made from chicken thigh meat that is coated in a breaded mixture, fried and seasoned, a process that involves multiple industrial steps such as battering, cooking and the addition of preservatives, raising agents and flavorings, which places it in the NOVA 4 ultra‑processed category. The label lists five additives: diphosphates (E450) as a leavening agent, sodium carbonates (E500) for pH control, carrageenan (E407) as a gelling agent, paprika extract (E160c) as a colorant, and various flavor enhancers such as yeast extract and dextrose.

How does the sugar and salt content in this product affect a diabetic or hypertensive diet?

With 3.6 g of sugars per 100 g, the snack adds a modest amount of quickly digestible carbohydrates that can raise blood glucose levels, so people managing diabetes should count it toward their daily sugar allowance. The 1.5 g of salt per 100 g is relatively high and contributes significantly to daily sodium intake, which may increase blood pressure; hypertensive individuals should limit consumption and balance it with low‑salt foods elsewhere in the day.

Is crousty chicken hot & spicy suitable for gluten‑free or vegan diets?

No. The breaded coating contains wheat flour, wheat starch and gluten, making it unsuitable for a gluten‑free diet. Additionally, the primary protein source is chicken meat and the formulation includes chicken fat, so it is not vegan or vegetarian.
