Why is WALKERS Masala Chicken Flavour Potato Crisps classified as ultra‑processed (NOVA 4) and what specific additives does it contain?

It is ultra‑processed because the sliced potatoes are fried in refined vegetable oils, flavored with a complex masala chicken seasoning, and contain several industrial additives, including colour (E160c paprika extract), antioxidants (E300 ascorbic acid, E306 tocopherol‑rich extract, E392 rosemary extract), acidity regulator (E327 calcium lactate), acid (E330 citric acid), and additional flavourings. The presence of these manufactured ingredients places the snack in NOVA group 4.

How does the sugar and salt content in this product affect a diabetic or hypertensive diet?

The snack provides 2.6 g of sugars per 100 g, slightly above the average for crisps, which can contribute to blood‑glucose spikes if eaten in large quantities, so diabetics should limit portion size. Its salt level is only 0.0016 g per 100 g, far below typical snack levels, so it does not add a significant sodium burden for hypertensive individuals, although the high fat and calorie content remain a concern for heart health.

Based on the ingredients, is this product suitable for strict diets like Vegan, Keto, Halal, or Gluten‑Free?

The product is not vegan because the masala chicken flavour is derived from animal sources, and the label notes possible traces of milk, soy, mustard and wheat gluten, so it is not gluten‑free. With 53 g of carbohydrates per 100 g, it exceeds keto limits, and the presence of chicken‑derived flavour makes its halal status uncertain without specific certification.
