Why is Ovomaltine Crunchy Cream classified as ultra‑processed (NOVA 4) and what specific additives does it contain?

It is classified as NOVA 4 because the formulation relies on refined sugars, added oils, emulsifiers, flavorings, vitamin and antioxidant premixes, and malt extract, all of which undergo extensive industrial processing; the declared additives include E307 (alpha‑tocopherol), E341ii (dicalcium phosphate), E471 (mono‑ and diglycerides of fatty acids), vanillin flavor, and L‑ascorbylpalmitate as an antioxidant.

How does the high sugar and salt content in this product affect a diabetic or hypertensive diet?

With roughly 50 g of sugar per 100 g, the spread can cause rapid blood‑glucose spikes, making it poorly suited for people managing diabetes, while its moderate salt level (0.2 g/100 g) is below the average for sweetened beverages and therefore less likely to aggravate hypertension; however, the high saturated‑fat and calorie load may indirectly influence blood‑pressure control and weight management.

Is Ovomaltine Crunchy Cream suitable for vegan, keto, gluten‑free, or halal diets?

No, the product is not vegan because it contains milk and malt extract, it is not gluten‑free due to barley malt, it is not keto‑friendly because of its very high sugar and carbohydrate content, and while it contains no pork‑derived ingredients, it lacks an official halal certification, so its suitability for halal diets cannot be confirmed.

Product Insights

Ovomaltine Crunchy Cream is a hazelnut‑chocolate spread enriched with Ovomaltine malt powder, sold in a 380 g glass jar with a plastic lid and marketed as a sweet breakfast spread. It belongs to the Sweetened Beverages group (pnns_groups: Beverages, Sweetened beverages), carries a Nutri‑Score of E and is classified as NOVA 4 ultra‑processed, reflecting its high levels of added sugar (≈50 g per 100 g), saturated fat (≈5.5 g per 100 g) and a range of food additives such as E307, E341ii and E471. While it provides modest protein (≈3.7 g per 100 g) and contains no palm oil, its very high sugar and fat content, presence of gluten, milk and nut allergens, and low Eco‑Score (F) limit its suitability for health‑conscious or allergen‑sensitive consumers.
