Why is XXL Strawberry Sugar Free classified as ultra‑processed (NOVA 4) and which additives does it contain?

The candy is made from refined ingredients, multiple sweeteners, colourants and other industrial substances rather than whole foods, which places it in NOVA group 4. Its additive list includes aspartame (E951), sorbitol (E420), sucralose, acesulfame‑K, colourant E120, acidulants E296, E330 and E334, and anti‑caking agent E470b.

How does the high polyol (sorbitol) content affect consumers with diabetes or digestive sensitivity?

Sorbitol is a sugar‑alcohol that provides minimal impact on blood glucose, making it attractive for people managing diabetes, but it is poorly absorbed in the intestine; consuming large amounts can draw water into the gut and cause bloating, gas or laxative effects, especially in individuals with sensitive digestion.

Is this candy suitable for vegan, keto or gluten‑free diets, and are there any ingredients that could pose concerns?

The product is gluten‑free and low in carbohydrates, which aligns with keto criteria, but it contains the non‑vegan colourant E120 and a fully hydrogenated sunflower oil that may contain trace animal‑derived processing agents, so it is not fully vegan. Aside from phenylalanine from aspartame, there are no other common allergens.

Product Insights

XXL Strawberry Sugar Free - Pieces are sugar‑free strawberry‑flavored compressed candies marketed as a sweet snack. They belong to the Sugary snacks group, carry a Nutri‑Score of C and are classified in NOVA group 4, indicating an ultra‑processed product; they are low in sugar, fat, saturated fat and salt but contain 93 g of polyols per 100 g and several additives such as aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame‑K, E120 colour, acidulants and an anti‑caking agent. While the low sugar and calorie content may suit sugar‑restricted diets, the high polyol level can cause laxative effects, the product supplies phenylalanine (relevant for PKU) and includes a non‑vegan colour, limiting suitability for certain dietary preferences.
