Why is Organic Protein classified as ultra-processed (NOVA 4) and what specific additives does it contain?

The product combines many isolated ingredients such as pea protein, brown rice protein, rice dextrin and a variety of superfood extracts, which require extensive processing; it also includes added sweeteners, stabilizers and flavors. The label lists six additives: erythritol (E968), guar gum (E412), xanthan gum (E415), sunflower lecithin, natural flavors and rosemary extract, all of which are typical of ultra-processed foods.

How does the high salt content in Organic Protein affect a hypertensive or heart-healthy diet?

With a salt level classified as high, the product can contribute a significant amount of sodium per serving, which may raise blood pressure and counteract heart-healthy dietary recommendations. People managing hypertension should limit their portion size or choose a lower-sodium protein supplement.

Is Organic Protein suitable for strict diets such as vegan, gluten-free, keto or halal?

The formula is vegan, USDA-organic and gluten-free, making it compatible with vegan and gluten-free diets. However, it contains rice dextrin and a modest amount of natural flavors that add carbohydrates, so it is not ideal for a strict keto regimen. All ingredients are plant-derived, so it is generally acceptable for halal nutrition, although the exact source of natural flavors is not specified.

Product Insights

Organic Protein is a plant-based protein powder from the Orgain brand, marketed as an organic, vegan and gluten-free dietary supplement for bodybuilding and general nutrition. It falls within the protein foods group (protein powders), carries a Nutri-Score of 'not applicable' due to its supplement status, and is classified as an ultra-processed product (NOVA 4). The blend provides a substantial amount of plant protein and low sugars, but its moderate fat, high sodium, and a range of six additives (including gums, erythritol and natural flavors) make its overall nutritional profile mixed.
